August with his car bearing the Minnesota license plate 'ATHEIST'

August Berkshire has been a leader in the atheist movement since 1984 when he co-founded and was the first president of the Twin Cities Chapter of American Atheists (which became Minnesota Atheists in 1991).

He has been a speaker on atheism for comparative religion classes in high schools since 1985, to community colleges since 2000, and to Christian colleges since 2004.  He uses down-to-earth arguments and examples that he wishes he had heard when he was in school.  He believes that atheists have already won the intellectual debate, now they have to win the emotional and political debates.

Exploring Atheism” is one of several of August’s presentations.  He is available for schools, community groups, panel discussions, conferences, radio, and TV.  He also does a limited number of debates.

“Exploring Atheism”

What is atheism and how is it different from theism and agnosticism?  How do the atheist and theist worldviews differ?  What are gods and do theists really care about them?  How old is atheist thought?  How many atheists are there?   What are some atheist critiques of religion?  What is the Problem of Evil?  Is prayer effective?  What is the Biblical view of the universe?  What is some of the evidence for evolution?  What’s wrong with creationism and intelligent design?  Is there a conflict between science and religion?  What is neurotheology?  Is god-belief a product of evolution?  How do atheists find purpose and meaning in life?  How has atheism been portrayed in the arts?  Where do atheists get their ethics?  Can gays be “cured” through religion?  Is God anti-abortion?  What’s wrong with Christian salvation?  What is secularism?  Why do atheists bother to organize?  What are some popular atheist books?  What are some good atheist jokes?
