Dawkins sounds extremely intelligent and very well spoken. I can’t believe how religous people make him seem like a modern day devil, along with atheistic beliefs as being bad. Religion to me almost seems like a mental tool for people that are insecure about themselves and things such as death, morals, relief from guilty, the unknown, etc… I personally have always believed that science is our only way of understanding how everything “really works”, with belief in realtime evidence to back up theories.
Dawkins is really putting his neck out, so to speak. I would really fear some of the religous finatics out there ready to pinpoint him as contemptous and rude, and wanting to crucify him just because he gets a little emotional and speaks up for what is correct and factual.
Modern science has not been around long enough to make everyone see what the real truth is, and how we evolved, and continue to evolve. It’s probably going to take older generations “dying-off,” unfortunately, to really get us out of the stoneage way of thinking of faith and complete religous devotion as truth, when it in fact is completely illusive to scientific evidence whatsoever, along with being a one-track minded way of thinking.
My wife along with her whole family is very Christian and don’t think I would ever talk to them openly about my atheistic beliefs, in fear of being ostracized and excluded, or just made to feel uncomfortable especially during the holidays. They are also very college educated, eg. engineer and teachers, so I am kind of shocked that they believe so fully in the religous nonsense and go to church absolutely every Sunday. Thats why I think it must be more of a mental tool, since I can’t see any of the logic there. I mean, I feel love and have morals too…without the eye in the sky watching over me.
I am happy I found Mr. Berkshire’s site, and gratefull for him and Dr. Dawkins, and other fellow Atheists for being brave enough to speak out and openly about the facts. Lets leave our right-sided brain for imagination and creativity, not for determining our reality. Sorry If I rambled-on a bit… Thank you.
A good and moral Atheist.
